Learn & Engage

Engage

GLOS builds bridges between data users and data providers to meet information needs across the region. Participation and engagement with stakeholders is systematically and routinely integrated into GLOS activities. The GLOS Outreach team works to:

  • Engage users and identify data needs in the Great Lakes region
  • Educate and train data users and providers
  • Build partnerships and collaborate with federal, state, and local government, non-profit organizations, industry, educators, and Great Lakes communities

Teaching with Great Lakes Data

GLOS supports Teaching with Great Lakes Data, which connects educators and student to data collected throughout the Great Lakes. GreatLakesLessons.com provides Great Lakes data sets, an overview of teaching methods, and ready-to-use lessons and activities. All of the materials on the web site are free to use.

Teaching with Great Lakes Data enables educators to:

  • Encourage students to develop higher-level thinking skills using real data
  • Explore dead zones, climate, weather and fish habitat in the Great Lakes
  • Enhance teaching skills through guided inquiry methods

Great Lakes Lessons: Teaching with Great Lakes Data is part of an effort to facilitate greater understanding about and use of observing systems data. In collaboration with the Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence - Great Lakes, NOAA's Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory, and researchers at Eastern Michigan University, Michigan Sea Grant develops and updates lessons and activities that focus on monitoring and observing in the Great Lakes.
